The Indian Premier League matches in Bangalore would be dry, as liquor would not be served even in the corporate boxes of the Chinnaswamy Stadium if things go as Police Commissioner Shankar Bidari wants.

The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) and the Chinnaswamy Stadium authorities have on Tuesday been asked to follow the Karnataka Licensing and Controlling of Places of Public Amusement (Bangalore City) Order, 2002, and prevent people from getting drunk while watching the match.

“About 41,000 people, including sports officials, players and complimentary pass holders, are accommodated in the stadium, and even if 10,000 of them are in inebriated state, it would lead to a number of problems.” KSCA authorities are shocked.

“We suspect there is a misconception about liquor being sold in the stadium. Only the clubhouse attached to the restaurant serves liquor and during the matches liquor is served in the corporate boxes next to the pavilion near the commentary boxes.” The KSCA says that liquor is not sold across the stadium. A requisition has been made for the commissioner’s order to be relaxed.

Bidari’s order also said that the licensee will not organise or perform shows of public amusements that are obscene in character. It barred smoking in the stadium and holding of shows before 9 am and after 11 pm. It added that objectionable pictorial publicity material should not be displayed.

Security measure Bidari has promised to provide complete security during the IPL.

He has asked the KSCA to install door-frame metal detectors at all gates and have sufficient handheld metal detectors to check the baggage of people coming to watch the cricket matches.

The CCTV system should be updated, the order said, adding that Rs 27 lakh should be credited five days before the nine matches to be organised in Bangalore to ensure police bandobast. The order also prohibited any more construction in the stadium.
